What Is Walk & Talk Therapy?

Therapy That Moves With You

Walk & Talk Therapy takes your counseling session outside — onto a wooded path, a quiet trail, or a peaceful outdoor route. Instead of sitting face-to-face in an office, you and your therapist walk side by side, engaging in the same meaningful therapeutic work, just in a very different setting.

This approach brings together the proven benefits of traditional psychotherapy with the well-documented mental health advantages of physical movement and time spent in nature. The result is a session that feels more natural, more grounded, and for many clients, more freeing.

At Steady Compass, Walk & Talk sessions are available in-person at our New York and Connecticut locations and are offered as part of individual therapy. Your clinician will work with you to determine whether this modality is a good fit for your goals and needs.

The Session Experience

How a Walk & Talk Session Comes Together

01

Initial Assessment

Before beginning, you'll meet with your therapist — in-office or virtually — to complete an intake, set therapy goals, and discuss whether Walk & Talk is the right fit for your needs.

02

Route Planning Together

You and your therapist collaboratively choose a comfortable, private outdoor route. Privacy, terrain, and your physical comfort are all considered. Routes can be adjusted as the work evolves.

03

Opening Check-In

Each session begins with a brief grounding check-in — often at the trailhead or start of the path — to settle intentions, gauge how you're arriving, and transition into the therapeutic space.

04

The Walk & Session

You walk side by side at a comfortable pace, engaging in therapeutic conversation, somatic awareness, breathing techniques, or guided reflection — whatever your work calls for that day.

05

Closing & Integration

Sessions end with a closing ritual — a moment to reflect on what arose, anchor insights, and transition back to your day. A plan for the next session is set before you part ways.

Why It Works

The Benefits of Moving Through It

Nature Reduces Stress & Anxiety

Exposure to natural environments has been scientifically shown to lower cortisol, reduce blood pressure, and ease anxiety symptoms — providing a built-in co-therapist in the landscape itself.

Movement Breaks Rumination

Physical movement interrupts circular thinking patterns. Walking provides sensory input and forward momentum that helps clients stuck in anxiety or depressive loops shift their internal state.

Side-by-Side Builds Trust

Walking alongside your therapist — rather than sitting across from them — naturally levels the power dynamic, reduces the intensity of eye contact, and makes it easier to open up about difficult topics.

Boosts Cognitive Function

Research shows walking increases blood flow to the brain, enhances creative thinking, and supports problem-solving — making outdoor sessions an especially rich environment for therapeutic insight.

Reduces Therapy Stigma

For clients who feel anxious walking into a clinical office, the outdoor setting normalizes the experience. Sessions feel less formal, more human — which often means clients are more likely to show up and stay engaged.

Supports Whole-Body Healing

Walk & Talk honors the mind-body connection. Endorphin release, improved mood regulation, and somatic grounding come together to support healing at every level — not just the psychological.

Good Fit For

Who May Benefit

  • Those experiencing anxiety, stress, or mild to moderate depression
  • Clients who feel restless, confined, or uncomfortable in traditional office settings
  • Adolescents, young adults, and individuals with ADHD who benefit from movement

Important Considerations

When to Discuss With Your Clinician

  • Significant physical mobility limitations or chronic pain affecting walking
  • Active safety concerns or acute crisis that requires a contained environment
  • Deep trauma processing that benefits from the structure of an office setting
  • Severe dissociation or symptoms that require close clinical monitoring
  • Strong preference for absolute privacy that outdoor settings cannot fully guarantee
  • Extreme sensitivity to weather, seasonal allergies, or outdoor environments

Not sure if Walk & Talk is right for you? Your clinician will complete a thorough assessment during your initial consultation to determine the best approach for your goals.

Practical Questions, Answered

Where do Walk & Talk sessions take place?
+
Sessions take place on quiet, pre-selected outdoor routes near our Nyack, NY and Fairfield County, CT offices. Your clinician will work with you to identify a comfortable, private route that suits your pace and preferences. Routes are reviewed together before your first outdoor session begins.
What happens in bad weather?
+
Your clinician will always have an indoor backup plan for inclement weather. You'll discuss preferences and communication protocols ahead of time so there's never any confusion. Sessions may be held in-office or transitioned to telehealth when outdoor conditions aren't suitable.
Is Walk & Talk Therapy covered by insurance?
+
Walk & Talk sessions are billed as standard individual therapy sessions and may be covered depending on your insurance plan and clinician's credentials. We encourage you to contact our office to verify your benefits. We accept most major insurance plans and also offer out-of-network and sliding scale options.
How is confidentiality handled outdoors?
+
Privacy is taken seriously in every outdoor session. Your clinician will select routes with minimal foot traffic and step aside or pause conversation if others pass nearby. The inherent limits of outdoor confidentiality are discussed and documented during your informed consent process before any outdoor sessions begin.
What should I wear or bring?
+
Wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and supportive footwear. Bring water if you'd like. Sessions are paced gently — this is not a workout, and the pace is always guided by your comfort. No special equipment or preparation is needed beyond what you'd wear for a casual walk outdoors.
Can I bring my dog or a support animal?
+
This is something to discuss directly with your clinician. Some therapists may welcome the presence of a well-behaved pet as part of a nature-based, animal-assisted therapeutic approach — particularly if you're already receiving Animal-Assisted services through The Gentle Paw. Each situation is evaluated individually with your goals in mind.
